about
This song is full of nostalgia as I enter the time machine that memory can be. The cover art is a photograph of me, MANY years ago, at Brandon. I wrote the song a while ago - this is a remastered version. I don't count myself a great singer but I wanted to do this one.
lyrics
BRANDON MAN
Close your eyes and turn around.
I can see the sights, I can hear the sound
Of how it was.
Is it true you’re a Brandon Man,
Is it true you’re a Brandon Man?
Is it true you live on Brandon land -
Is it true you do?
Woodland soil carpeted with celandine,
Bluebells and the campions each springtime were mine.
Sunny thorn is bursting green with bread and cheese*,
Echoes of the woodland pigeon calling through the trees.
Is it true you’re a Brandon Man,
Is it true you’re a Brandon Man?
Is it true you live on Brandon land -
Is it true you do?
Close your eyes and turn around -
There’s an oak leaf sky and a rooty ground.
Put on your old, old shoes -
You’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.
Get yourself lost in a willowherb forest.
Is it true you’re a Brandon Man,
Is it true you’re a Brandon Man?
Is it true you live on Brandon land -
Is it true you do?
Vole, a mole, a nest, a hole, a running hare.
Elderberries, hazelnuts and acorns everywhere.
Catch a robin in your hand and let him fly
Out across the fields into a never-ending sky.
Sun always shines at Brandon, even in the rain,
Always shines at Brandon, even in the rain,
Always shines at Brandon, even in the rain.
Close your eyes and turn around.
Everything you lost is found
In how it was.
* The early spring leaves of the hawthorn were once eaten by poor folks who called them 'bread and cheese'. In some parts of the UK, the name has persisted.
